Our program

You'll learn how to play,
not just how to run plays

Fundamentals are the building blocks of every good player. Skills come first, then the reads and decisions that turn skills into a game. Character development runs alongside all of it.

What we train

Eight areas, every season

Shooting mechanics

Form shooting, catch-and-shoot, and shooting off the dribble at game speed.

Ball handling

Stationary and on-the-move dribbling, change of direction, handling pressure.

Footwork & finishing

Triple threat, pivots, and finishing packages at the rim with both hands.

Man-to-man defense

Stance, on-ball containment, closeouts, help and recovery. We do not play zone at any grade level.

Reading the game

Recognizing coverages and making the right decision before the ball moves.

Team concepts

Give-and-go, pick-and-roll, spacing, and how individual skill fits a team.

Rebounding

Boxing out, pursuit angles, and second-chance positioning on both ends.

Character & leadership

Accountability, handling adversity, and leading teammates in tight games.

How we defend

We play man-to-man.
Every team, every game.

A zone hides weak defenders. At the youth level it wins games, because most teams cannot shoot over it yet. It also means nobody on the floor has to learn how to guard anybody.

We play man-to-man at every grade level. Players learn stance, containment, closeouts, help, and recovery. They learn to guard a real person who is trying to beat them. It costs us games early. It is the reason our players can defend when they get to high school.

Shell defense gets weeks of work before our first tournament. Once games start we keep drilling it, moving through it faster instead of dropping it. We expect maximum effort every rep, and we do not let players go through the motions.

Justin was a two-time Big 12 All-Defensive Team selection, voted by the conference's coaches, and his team's Most Outstanding Defensive Player three years running. The defense every 1891 team plays is the defense he played.

Inside a practice

What an hour looks like

01

Skill block

Every player on a ball. Ball handling and footwork patterns with coaches correcting reps in real time.

02

Breakdown

Small-sided work at game speed on the day's focus, whether that is finishing, closeouts, or two-man game.

03

Live play

Controlled scrimmage where the day's skill gets applied under pressure, coaches on the floor.
